Flexible Seating: We have flexible seating in our classroom. Every student has a different learning style so students choose which seat best meets their needs to learn in a comfortable environment. They are no longer tied to sitting at a desk all day. Desks are still an option, but are unassigned. Our seating options include stools, carpets, carpet, various low seats, a couch, and even a taller standing table. Students will have their own cubby to store their materials such as notebooks & binders. We tailor our classroom to meet your child’s needs.
This picture is my classroom 2017-18 school year.
Community Supplies: In our classroom, since we have no assigned seats, we don't have supply boxes or pencil pouches to keep track of. In our classroom, we use community supplies. In fact, I’ve used community supplies for the past 5 years. Why community supplies you ask?
EFFICIENCY - Community supplies cut down on lost learning time! Everything is right there. We know where it is. In fact, we have routines to get what we need and return to our seats quickly. I keep the pencils sharp and the tubs stocked.
SHARING - Community supplies promote sharing and cooperation which builds community. Sharing is something we have to do all day every day so it becomes part of who we are. It’s just what we do.
RESPECT - Community supplies helps us respect and care for our materials. If we don’t take care of our stuff, we don’t have fun stuff to help us learn.
FOCUS - Without a bunch of clutter in our work space we can focus on the task our class in currently involved in.
COST (parents love this one)- The need to purchase additional materials, such as pencils or glue, throughout the year is almost completely eliminated.

So, how does it work?! What does it look like? What is in our community supply area? Well, I’m glad you asked! Our bookshelves are stocked with all the supplies that students and I bring in at the beginning of the year. As crayons, color pencils, and markers hit the end of their life, we replace them with new materials. Need a pencil?... Grab a pencil. Need a marker? ... Grab a marker. Need some glue? ... Grab some glue. Everything we need is right out in the open and easy to find at all times.
